Heh, heh!  You can NEVER go wrong being a Fox! :-)

But then again, perhaps you're looking for something unique?  Take your time, explore your likes and interests.  See how your current personality matches up with critters and see if that helps you define your inner fursona.  If worse comes to worse though, a fursona isn't necessary to enjoy Furry because the fandom at its core is about an affinity for anthropomophics in Literature and Media and an approciation for animals and their welfare in general.

Welcome to the forum and the fandom! I hope you enjoy your stay and make plenty of new friends along the way.

I agree with Swift's approach of choosing an animal that's a reflection of you rather than the other way around. That being said, here's a short list of mammals I rarely or never see as fursonas:

  • Genet
  • Civet
  • Pangolin
  • Dikdik
  • Platypus
  • Tarsier
  • Kangaroo rat
  • Slender loris
  • Tapir

Birds are an even greater untapped market, since most stick to corvids and raptors. And I can count the number of insect and spider fursonas on both hands with fingers to spare.

If I may play devil's advocate with Nommer's point there; you don't want to go -too- far out there with some exotic/unusual species.  Even if it doesn't come across as desperate for attention, it can get exasperating explaining to each and every person exactly -what- your 'sona is.

There's also a reason most fursonas tend to be canine.  Dogs were the first domesticated animal humanity had, and therefore we're more likely to project a personality onto them.  Foxes ended up being a quick favorite among furries because of their distinctive color scheme, and being arguably the most photogenic animal (that Robin Hood movie Disney put out certaintly helps, as well).

That said, I do agree with the point of figuring out what traits you as a person exibit, and picking a species based on that.  Make it something recognizable; canines are loyal and sociable, cats are graceful and aloof, birds are proud and intelligent (depending on the individual species).  Alternatively, you can just come up with a few traits you want for your character, and figure out what exemplifies them the best.
