I'll be suiting up for the first time at this year's FurFright convention.
Dance Dance Dance

Do any of you fursuiting veterans have any good tips or advice for a noob like myself?

Stay hydrated. If you get dehydrated, then we (security) have to treat you. You wouldn't like us if we have to treat you. Wink

Other than that, I did some Googling, and I actually didn't have much luck! Most of the stuff I found was about making fursuits, not wearing them/acting in them. One starting point I did turn up though would be the Fursuitlounge community on LJ. It looks fairly active.

I also popped this post up on the front page, since I believe it is a good topic and deserves more eyes.

Watch your tail it will be your down fall!
Most the fursuiters seem to hold their tail when using the escalators at the AC.
I could not say if there is horror story behind that or not.

im not experienced at all but I think tail, heat, dehydration and tunnel vision would be some of the most common problems.
This is counting out stuff common scene tells you not to do like try to smoke in a fursuit.

I'd say number one thing to do is make sure you know where headless lounge(s ) are~
You'll be able to rest, get some air, and keep hydrated.
Otherwise don't trip or run into things/people~ Tongue

Three words

Water, Water, Water.

That is the most important thing about suiting. Staying cool, and staying hydrated should be your primary concerns at first.

Also, if you have a friend who can act as a handler for you then you'll probably be in some better shape. They can hold room keys, moneys, etc for you and ensure you don't get too swamped.

Scouting out the hotel so you know how to get around may seem like a "duh" thing, but knowing the shortest route to the headless lounge or your room is very important.

Also, don't overdo yourself. Suiting is a lot of fun but don't feel ashamed if you get too hot real quick. Being in suit with my head on for an hour still gets me pretty good and I've been suiting for about two years.

Have fun though! It's really what suiting is all about. :3

Pick up a bottle of Fabreeze. Make sure you get the stuff in the dark blue bottle. It works very well and will keep your suit from smelling. Since you're going to a con and want to wear it more than one day, just take it inside-out spray it down when you're finished and let a fan dry it out. By the next morning it should be pretty dry and ready to go without smelling like my socks.

As for suiting... yeah i'm new to that too. But not totally sure how to interact and play around yet. I did have a blast at AC though

Here's a good question... Is there any way to keep 'lil kids from pulling your tail? >_< Other than holding onto it and keeping it out of reach?

Make sure it's the anti-bacterial version. The regular version of Febreze only masks odors, it does not disinfect.

I know some fursuiters who use End-Bac, as well.

There's also a thread about the topic of cleaning fursuits on Anthrocon's site:

Redneck advise.
Wrap some barbwire around it.

Even if you turn around the kid will most likely thing your playing.

1. Have a handler run interference for you.
2. Maybe if you could find a chair you could sit on it.

two ideas. two bad ideas, but still, two ideas.

1. mace. AAAALLLLLL over that sucker. that'll keep 'em off!

2. lollipops. handing them out from the front will keep munchkins away from 'round back.

But wine gums have flavors, right? So they're also a little closer to skittles...

Are there such things as sour wine gums? I gotta get my stripey bum to Britain...

i feel bad for zombie jesus cuz he couldn't eat skittles because of the holes in his hands. but it is pretty awesome what he did, so...ya know. i hope they have skittles in heaven...*random raccoon is random*

Got that right about randomness.

Anyway, If you do try and get a packet of them, You should try Tesco or ASDA, They are bound to have atleast a packet of them in the sweet isle. And you would have to change up your money into English pounds, So all your money will be alot easier to carry around and it would be like halfed because of the exchange rate last time I checked.

try and limit your time in suit depending on surrounding temp. i never suited but the fire gear i wear on calls you sweat up a storm in no time and drink lots off water. just a warning if you pass out in suit and EMTs' show up and your handler has not goten you out of suit EMTs will cut you out of suit. as in not nice and will more than likely destroy it so have your handler be familiar with how to get your suit on and off and any clothing underneath you like will also be cut of since we cut clothing 90% of the time

I think another important advice is to practice. The more you wear it (just don't over do it either) the more you'll get comfortable with how it fits. Fits as in being able to properly walk without running into things, and also getting used to being inside it for lengths of time

And hope it's not from a material that will annoy your skin too.
