Preppy was a big thing in the 80's. There was this book called "The Preppy Handbook." It was about the lifestyle of the country-clup, private prep-school set. People tried to copy their "look" by wearing polo shirts, khaki pants, penny loafers, oxford-cloth button-down-collar shirts, and crew-neck wool sweaters. That sort of thing.
