Hello!

So ive been watching the furry fandom purcariously for the majority of the summer. Ive created my own character, found some friends (from DA that ive known forever) who will be getting a suit soon, and have really begun to understand this whole new world. But, the problem is, im 16 and i have been thinking about possibly getting a suit, but my parents have no idea about any of this.

Im not even sure they know about the term "furry". They know i like to draw, and bought me a tablet, they also know i draw, as they would say "doggies". But other than that, they are blind from eveything ive been learning.

So, how do i tell my parents about the fandom?

I mean, how do i introduce it to them, and tell them about if other than just the yucky yiff stuff. (its just not my kind of thing)

Did any of you go through this? And how did they react? What about your friends? Siblings? ect?

I just don't want them getting the idea of furry=yucky stuff.

If you could respond, i thank you in advance. C;

honestly halloween is a great time to introduce anyone to fursuiting :3 Also, do that know anything about the furfandom already? Cause if they don't, breath not a word about the yiffy stuff... act like that isn't even a thing. If they do know, act as if you never heard of it and as far as you've seen you didn't know it exists 0:3 then quickly change the subject to the positive side of furrydom.

Biggest thing to remember is that this is a fandom, not a religion or comming out of the closet sexuality... treat it like no big deal, as you would treat being an anime fan or being a trekkie Generic smiley face

Thats my 2 cents

Here's a thread with some helpful resources: http://www.anthrocon.org/node/6278/telling-family

You could also print up the PDF flier from http://www.anthrocon.org/about-furry and show it to them.

If you don't act like furry is something to be ashamed or embarassed of, I doubt you will have any issues with your parents.  This means that you should not volunteer any negative aspects of the fandom to them.  The negative aspects aren't worth your time and, as PR experts like to say, "accentuate the positive".

If your parents do say, "Well I heard awful things about furry from <some TV show>", your answer should be something along the lines of, "Mom, Dad, I need to remind you that <some TV show> is a work of fiction".

You can also send your parents to this site if you like.  We're a friendly bunch, if slightly offbeat at times. Tongue

Good luck!
