I did some upgrades on the website hardware earlier tonight. And by "hardware" I really mean "VPS".

The old machine which hosted this website (and several others) only had 512 Megs of RAM, and was running into disk I/O issues. I couldn't free up more RAM for the database to use without impacting the disk cache, and I couldn't increase the disk cache without decreasing the size of MySQL's query cache (and therefore hitting the disk more often). Not a good position to be in.

So I bit the bullet and after running into another round of I/O issues earlier this evening, decided to upgrade the VPS to a larger instance which now has 1 Gigabyte of RAM. Immediately after the upgrade I increased MySQL's query cache from 128 Megs to 256 Megs. I'm going to keep an eye on performance metrics over the next couple of days, and probably bump it up even higher to 512 Megs sometime next week.

The old VPS was $20/mo, this new one is $40/mo. So I think I'm getting good value for the money.

Enjoy!
