Hello

I'm ready to start my website, and now, I try to find an excellent web hosting for it. After some searches, I found this one:

http://www.ipage.com/hosting-features

with an offer which finnishes tommorow. This site seems to have a good rate, and I find it very interesting. Do you think it's a good value for money? Would you choose another web hosting? If you have any tips about it... ^^"

Thank you

1&1 and GoDaddy would be my suggestions for web hosting.  I've never really heard of this host before.

GoDaddy is kinda limited, and... I didn't know that 1&1 has servers and services in USA too. However, they are kinda more expensive (until more than twice more expensive), that's why... I really which to know if someone knows well web hostings, since I'm new into that...

Godaddy has a history of pulling entire domains over complaints from third parties.  Example: http://news.cnet.com/2100-1025-6153607.html?tag=tb Scary stuff.

I've been a customer of NearlyFreeSpeech.net for over 5 years now. They rock.  If you're looking for something a little more powerful, check out Linode. (Fun fact: this website is hosted on an Linode)

Oh... Indeed, that's weird from the "largest registra of the world".

Nearlyfreespeech is weird with its price system... i love that

But I still understand hardly... for a starting site, it's can be very good, but if ever we reach a huge bandwidth... it can be very expensive. (not sure how much is the avairage per month of bandwidth...) otherwise, it's kinda poor into information of features. :/ (yes, I try to find something kinda powerful)

Otherwise, I gave a look to Limode... Isn't it only into server hosting?

If you're pushing a TB a month, under NFSN's pricing, that's somewhere between $.20 and $.25 a month, which is more than places like Amazon Web Services (somewhere around 10 cents/GB), but certainly not ruinous, either.  And it's not like you can't switch webhosts when your traffic reaches those levels.

The real thing to watch out for are webhosts that promise you some huge quota for a small amount.  Say... 100 GB/mo for $7/mo.  That's actually a scam, and here's why:

First problem is pricing.  No small website is going to come anywhere near 100 GB a month.  I'd be surprised if a small website did even 1 GB a month.  So, given the above example, you're suddenly paying $7 for a single gigabyte of traffic. That's one very expensive gigabyte!

Second problem is CPU usage. You'll notice that it's left out of most pricing plans.  There is no universal metric for CPU usage due to different chips and architectures, and this is a problem because at some point your webhost will tell you "you're using too much CPU", and either shut you down, or force you to upgrade to a more expensive plan.

Case study: many years ago I had Anthrocon.org hosted with Dreamhost. One day, the site started throwing HTTP 503 errors. When I wrote to Dreamhost, their answer was, "You're using too much CPU, you need to spend over $100/mo and get a dedicated server".  (I told them to screw off, and moved the entire site over to NearlyFreeSpeech.  Cost us less than $5/mo while it was hosted there.)

Oh o.o alright, indeed... having a dedicated server for a website? *giggles*

Well... you're right, if ever prices start to get very high, I can switch to 1&1 or such.

I think I wil give it a try, it finally seems quite interesting. I ill wait a little while to continue well my website, then host it.

Thank you very much :3

By the way, some last questions: I don't find it nowhere in the site, but..
-is it possible to make several subdomains?
-to get several ftp accounts?
-how many email addresses can I get?

I promise you, I stop to bother you with my questions ^^' thank you very much

-is it possible to make several subdomains?

If you wanted... a good webhost will let you make as many DNS entries as you want, and as many servers as you want.  NearlyFreeSpeech will let you do that, and you just pay for the traffic. (having your own machine will let you do that, too)

-to get several ftp accounts?

Don't use FTP.  It transmits the passwords in plaintext.  If multiple people are to have access to a website, you may want to look at Drupal or a similar content management system. (it's what I use to power this site!)

-how many email addresses can I get?

Depends.  If you use Google Apps for your email, you can have up to 10 users for free.  But that's full-blown email accounts.  Forwarders are pretty much unlimited.

Don't worry about asking all these questions.  I do this stuff for a living, and I love talking about it.

oh... :3 alright.

well... kinda limited with this site compared of what I want to do, but... I guess it's still a good start, and if my project works really good and attracts a lot of people... I will change it ^^'

However, I'm making my own site, I don't wish to use a pre-made one. If I can't get a ftp account for NFS, how to upload my files? is there an interface for it?

EDIT: by the way, Limote is more for servers than web hosting, right?
